OAR creates safety course (OR: March 2009)

The recent assault on a real estate agent in southwest Ohio is an unfortunate reminder of the need for the industry stay aware of the dangers present in day-to-day activities.
As such, the Ohio Association of REALTORS has recently partnered with REALTOR University, operated by the National Association of REALTORS, to offer a comprehensive “REALTOR Safety” online program.  The three hour course, which is not certified for continuing education credit, can be easily downloaded and viewed at your convenience.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to provide our membership with an invaluable resource to work smartly and safely,” said Tim Lockwood, OAR’s vice president for professional development. “The issue of REALTOR safety is an ongoing priority for our organization and we’re pleased that this timely tool is now available.”

Members can access the program by visiting education section of www.ohiorealtors.org, then clicking online continuing education and then the REALTOR University button. Cost is $49.

“Every year, REALTORS across the country are victims of physical, sexual and identity crimes while fulfilling the everyday requirements of their jobs. The REALTOR organization is committed to helping every one of its members make good choices and practice personal safety on the job,” Lockwood said.

He noted that the course is designed to teach REALTORS:
(1) how to spot dangerous situations while at work, with a client, and on the road;
(2) practical tips on what to do if you are in a dangerous situation; and
(3) policies and procedures you or your broker can put in place to ensure a safe working environment.

The course is presented in an interactive format, utilizing state-of-the-art  3-D graphics. A free preview is available to see if it meets your needs.
It begins by asking 18 different safety related questions to assess your current level of risk. Among the questions:
• Do you always park your car where you can leave a listing quickly?
• Do you ever show homes at night?
• Do you always meet your clients at your office?
• Do you carry a charged cell phone?
• Do you have an office safety policy?
• Do you keep your car properly maintained?
• Do you avoid dangerous places?
• Do you trust your instincts when you sense danger?
• Do you keep in constant contact with your office when showing a home?
• Are you aware of your environment?
• Do you ever hold an open house alone?

Students will then be guided through an array of interactive rooms and settings, with audio conveying various tips and insights. You will be able to click on different components to raise your awareness of possible safety threats, Lockwood added.

REALTORS throughout Ohio will join their counterparts nationwide to celebrate REALTOR Safety Week, Sept. 13-19, (2009).
